Leaving the Past Behind

Just after Jesus’ first meeting with the leaders of Judaism, he embarked on a series of events that would cause these same doctors of the Law to question his methods. He seemed to make a point of contradicting everything they stood for. Whether it was the company he kept or his personal lifestyle, as it pertained to God, Jesus challenged all men to rethink what they held as true or righteous living. One day, Jesus was watching Levi, a tax collector who probably worked for Herod Antipas, but he could have been working for the Roman oppressor. Jesus said to him, “Follow Me,” and Levi left his old life with all its worldly rewards and followed Jesus (Luke 5:27-28). Did he know Jesus before his call? Was he at least aware of the miracles folks were saying Jesus had done? Luke doesn’t say, but probably Levi at least knew about Jesus. Read the rest of this entry »

War Between the Flesh and the Spirit

Walking in the Spirit is a matter of choice, but it is more complicated than simply a matter of choice. To begin with, the flesh is at war with the Spirit (Galatians 5:17). In other words, the flesh or the natural man (1Corinthians 2:14) will not embrace the things of the Spirit, because spiritual matters are foolishness to the natural order of things—or how the natural man (viz. the spirit of man) understands his world. The natural man compares physical evidence with physical evidence in order to draw his conclusions, but the spiritual man compares spiritual matters with spiritual matters (1Corinthians 2:13). The natural man has no frame of reference in spiritual matters, because they are spiritually discerned, i.e. they are understood through the Spirit of God which is given to believers (cf. 1Corinthians 2:14 and Galatians 5:17). According to Galatians 1:4, Paul claims that Christ has delivered us from this present evil world. This is the true Gospel, and anything or anyone that places us back in the world would be a false gospel or a false prophet. Notice that through the Gospel we receive grace and peace from God our Father and Jesus our Messiah (Genesis 1:3), and in this God is glorified (Genesis 1:5). Contrariwise, God’s grace and peace cannot be enjoyed, if we are in the world, and, if this is our position, then God is not glorified in our behavior, no matter how righteous looking that behavior seems to be. In other words, God is glorified in our behavior in Christ (Ephesians 2:10; Philippians 2:13, see Philippians 2:11), but he is not glorified in our behavior in the world, from which Christ has delivered us according to the Gospel.
